Reformer Pilates:

Everything You Need To Know

If you’re chasing a workout that builds strength, sharpens your mind, and leaves your body feeling balanced, Reformer Pilates might be your perfect match. This low‑impact but seriously effective class uses a reformer machine to create controlled, resistance‑based movement that challenges your whole body.

Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect before you jump in:

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a dynamic, full‑body style of Pilates performed on a specialised machine called a Reformer. Unlike mat Pilates, the Reformer uses a sliding carriage, springs, pulleys, and straps to add adjustable resistance to your movements. This creates a workout that builds strength, improves flexibility, and enhances stability — all while supporting your body in a controlled, low‑impact way.

The machine allows you to train lying down, seated, kneeling, or standing, giving you endless exercise variety. It’s suitable for all fitness levels, from complete beginners to experienced movers, and is especially loved for its ability to strengthen the core, improve posture, and tone muscles without repetitive or high‑impact training.

How Does the Reformer Work?

The heart of the machine is the moving carriage, which glides as you push or pull with your arms and legs. Springs are adjusted to increase or decrease resistance, allowing you to tailor the intensity to your fitness level. Straps and handles guide your movement patterns, helping you stay aligned and in control.
Every position challenges your strength, balance, and coordination while giving you the support you need to move safely and effectively

Is Reformer Pilates Beginner‑Friendly?

Absolutely. The Reformer is highly adjustable, making it perfect for beginners. You can start with lighter resistance and gradually increase the challenge as you build confidence and strength. Many newcomers find the machine easier to learn on because it supports the body and helps guide proper technique. With an instructor’s guidance, you’ll move safely, comfortably, and at your own pace.

How is Reformer Pilates Different from Mat Pilates?

While Reformer Pilates and mat Pilates share the same foundations, the way you train on each is quite different. Mat Pilates is performed on the floor and uses your body weight for resistance. You’ll work through movements like leg lifts, planks, and stretches to build strength, mobility, and core stability — all with minimal equipment.

Reformer Pilates uses a specialised machine with springs and pulleys to add adjustable resistance. This allows for a greater range of motion and provides extra support, making some exercises easier to learn while still offering plenty of challenge. The resistance can be increased or decreased to suit your fitness level, and the variety of movements keeps every session interesting and dynamic.

Both styles are excellent for improving core strength, flexibility, and posture — but the Reformer adds a unique level of support, versatility, and progression that you won’t get from a mat alone.

Can Reformer Pilates Help with Back Pain or Injuries?

Yes. Reformer Pilates is often recommended for people managing back pain or recovering from injuries because it’s low‑impact, controlled, and highly supportive. Strengthening the core helps stabilise the spine, which can reduce discomfort and improve posture. The machine also encourages balanced muscle development, helping prevent strain and overuse.
With its adaptable design, the Reformer is a fantastic tool for rehabilitation and long‑term injury prevention.

Can I Do Reformer Pilates During Pregnancy?

Many women safely practice Reformer Pilates during pregnancy, but it’s essential to get clearance from your GP or healthcare provider first. The Reformer can help strengthen the core, support the back, and maintain posture as your body changes.
Exercises can be modified for each trimester, and the adjustable springs allow for a comfortable, low‑impact workout. It’s important to work with an instructor experienced in prenatal Pilates to ensure everything is safe, supportive, and tailored to your needs.

  • A water bottle
  • An open mind and a willingness to move
